If there has been a defining musical story this year it has been the revenge of pop. The indie guitar boys were swept away by exuberant dance floor fillers that sank big dumb hooks into our collective consciousness and refused to let go. And Lady GaGa was the valkyrie leading the charge, fire erupting from both barrels of her conical metal bra as she exhorted us to Just Dance. Exhibiting a blonde ambition to rival her idol Madonna, former New York art student and burlesque stripper Joanne Stefani Germanotta made an album entitled The Fame and it made her famous.
Her record company have quickly returned to milk that success before the well runs completely dry, compensating for collapsing sales by effectively flogging fans the same album twice as a special edition. Yet there is an irrepressible quality to GaGa that is given full rein in an album’s worth of extras, the eight-track, 35 minute Fame Monster.

She comes storming out with new single, Bad Romance, featuring a self-referencing hook (“GaGa – oh la la) and typically transgressive catch phrases: “I want you ugly, I want your disease”. What she really wants, of course, is our continued attention. Although not as thematically integrated as the original Fame, GaGa’s vivacious energy, bold melodies and almost comically relentless sensationalism keeps things interesting.
For all that GaGa’s oeuvre seems prototypically synthetic, she is more DIY than manufactured. There’s a track (not included here) on a new compilation of sessions from the Jo Whiley show (Radio 1’s Live Lounge Vol 4, out on Sony) that gives the game away. A fluid, playful, jazzy solo piano and vocal rendition of her techno hit Poker Face reveals the autotuned automaton to be an entirely cynical creation, a gifted writer and musician dumbing down her underground instincts and refined musical sensibilities for the demands of mainstream stardom. I don’t know if the fact that it has worked so well reflects worse on her or us.

The Fame Monster, in three different versions – a standard version of the new 8-song album; a deluxe version which includes both The Fame Monster and her massively successful debut album The Fame; and this collector’s edition super-deluxe art book version, which includes both albums, fanzines, 3-D glasses, paper dolls, a puzzle, pictorials, a lock of Lady Gaga’s hair and other surprises.
